Creating a Canvas Assignment

Summary

This article details the process of creating and configuring a Canvas Assignment, including, scoring, submission type, and (optionally) enabling peer reviews. It also explains how to set differentiated due dates for specific students.

Creating an Assignment

  1. In the desired course, click the Assignments link in the left-hand Course Navigation Menu.

  2. Click the +Assignment button at the top of the page. This will create a new, untitled assignment and take you to the Assignment’s Details page.

  3. Enter an assignment name in the Assignment Name field.

  4. Enter an assignment description and/or student instructions in the Assignment Description text area.

  5. Enter the number of points possible in the Points field. You can choose not to count assignments toward the final grade by checking the Do not count this assignment towards the final grade box. This feature allows you to provide feedback for assignments without the assignment counting toward Gradebook calculations.

  6. Select the assignment Submission Type. See Assignment Submission Types for an expanded explanation of the different submission types.

  7. If you want to assign peer reviews, click the Require Peer Reviews checkbox. See [Article Title] for more information about Peer Reviews.

  8. By default, Canvas will assign your assignment to everyone in your course. Use the Due date field to specify a submission deadline for the assignment. Use the Available from field to set the date and time when the Assignments will become available to students.

  9. Use the Until date to set a date and time when the assignment will no longer be available. If the Until date is after the Due date, students will continue to see the assignment in the course, but they will not be able to make submissions after the Due date.

  10. Optional - to set differentiated due and availability dates for specific students, click the +Add button to create an additional availability rule. Type a student’s name. The search field is dynamic; you can search by any part of the student’s name and click the student when they appear. You can include more than one student in the same Assign to field. Repeat this step to create additional availability rules for different students.

  11. Click the Save button to save your work and return to the assignment later to make changes. If you’re ready to make the assignment available, click the Save & Publish button.

Note: You can enter student groups, or entire course sections in the Assign to fields. You are not limited to individual students.
