QM 4.2 The relationship between the use of instructional materials in the course and completion of learning activities and assessments is clearly explained. (Essential)

Clearly explaining how instructional materials relate to learning activities and assessments helps students understand why they are studying certain materials and how these materials will be used in assessments. This understanding guides their study efforts and helps them to allocate their time and resources efficiently.

General Suggestions

  • In the instructions for each assignment or assessment, specify which instructional materials should be referenced or studied. (e.g., “Refer to Ch. 2 in the textbook for an explanation of how the Doppler effect is used for radar sensors”).

  • Organize course materials in the LMS to reflect the flow from instructional materials to learning activities to assessments.

  • Optional materials are clearly labeled as such.

  • If learners are expected to find their own learning materials, provide clear and detailed guidelines.

  • At the beginning of each module or unit, provide an overview that links the instructional materials to the learning activities and assessments that will follow.

Examples

Case Study Analysis: Students choose one case study from the provided textbook chapter or research articles and write an analysis on the techniques used, the outcomes, and the scalability of the practices. In the instructions for the assignment, you could include:

  • “Refer to Chapter 5 of your textbook for background information on your chosen case study and supplement your analysis with at least one of the research articles provided in week 3 of the module.”
