YouTube Advertisements in Canvas

Instructure is changing how Canvas interacts with YouTube content; starting September 22, 2025, any existing or newly added YouTube videos embedded in Canvas may begin displaying advertisements. These ads are controlled by YouTube and cannot be disabled within Canvas.

We know the YouTube content you have linked in courses most likely falls into one of two buckets:

  • Your own content that you created, uploaded, and own

  • Someone else’s content that you found and linked, but don’t own

For your own video content, you can move those to be hosted within Panopto. Directions for how to do this can be found in this article: Uploading Media. You must have Creator access in order to upload video files into Panopto. Learn how to embed Panopto videos in Canvas: How to Embed Panopto Videos in a Canvas Course.

For someone else’s video content, you will need to decide if you keep the content (which may show ads) or find alternative materials. Boise State has made a feature request to our video platform, Panopto, to see if they have an embedding option that will strip YouTube advertisements.

If you prefer to continue using direct YouTube links or embeds, please consider adding a disclaimer to your course: “Some videos may display advertisements. These ads are not affiliated with or endorsed by Boise State.” This helps to clarify with students that any ads shown are outside of Boise State’s control.
